Some places are discovered, while others seem to have been waiting to be found. The Sanctuary belongs to the first category: a new adults-only boutique hotel in Huatulco, Oaxaca, conceived as an intimate retreat where architecture, art, nature, and the ocean come together in an experience deliberately removed from the crowds of large resorts.
With just eight rooms, The Sanctuary embraces a small and personal scale. Most rooms feature ocean views, while the Pacific is just steps away, with direct access to the beach. The sound of the waves, the call of birds, and the surrounding vegetation are an essential part of the experience.
A Vision That Brings Rome and the Pacific Together
The Sanctuary is part of Cosmo, an exclusive residential development located in El Arrocito, Huatulco. Both projects were born from the vision of their developer, Shaun Wymes, a British businessman based in Houston with a passion for travel, architecture, and culture.
A lover of both Rome and Mexico, Wymes sought to bring together elements he admires most about both worlds in a project deeply connected to the landscape of Huatulco.
The architecture of The Sanctuary reflects his particular fascination with Classical Rome. Arches, vaulted ceilings, columns, and other elements inspired by Roman architecture are integrated throughout the property, while a roof oculus evokes the iconic Pantheon in Rome, allowing natural light and the sky to become part of the architectural experience.
This inspiration is complemented by decorative elements connected to the aesthetics and history of the Roman world, reinterpreted within an entirely different setting: the lush Pacific coast of Mexico.
The result is an unconventional meeting of two places that have shaped its creator’s personal vision: the Rome Shaun loves and the Mexico he chose as the setting for his creation.
Rather than attempting to replicate Roman architecture, The Sanctuary seeks to capture something of its spirit — the monumentality of arches, the interplay of light, and the relationship between architecture and sky — and reinterpret it within a tropical, intimate, and contemporary setting.
The Luxury of Less
At a time when large resorts dominate many coastal destinations, The Sanctuary proposes a different approach to hospitality: fewer rooms, fewer guests, and more space to enjoy the surroundings.
The concept is exclusively for adults and designed for couples and travelers who value tranquility, privacy, and personal experiences over crowds and large-scale resorts.
